Monthly Lojban Community Roundup — March 2017

It’s time to wrap up March 2017 in this month’s Monthly Lojban Community Roundup, where I attempt to find the month’s most interesting material from IRC, the mailing list, Reddit, Facebook and Twitter, and present it here in a condensed form.

Previous issues:

  1. January 2017
  2. February 2017

Unlike last month, where picking out interesting topics to cover was at least somewhat akin to finding needles in a haystack, there really wasn’t much hay in March at all. It was a calm month, though there were at least a few things worth appreciating.

NOIhA

The cmavo of selma’o NOIhA are all the hype right now — everyone‘s talking about them.

I wish.

Somehow most people have never even heard of NOIhA. A good while ago, in March 2016 to be exact, I wrote what was to this day the only written documentation of NOIhA out there. But… it’s in Lojban:

I think very few people have read that article. Shocking, I know!

Well, anyway.

Since I consider NOIhA absolutely necessary, the best way to raise awareness is to write about it in English. That is the purpose of the present article.

A Simpler Quantifier Logic

This article is part of the Simpler series on simplifying certain aspects of Lojban.
See also A Simpler Connective System and A Simpler Morphology [coming soon].

In this article I will take a closer look at the quantifier logic currently present in (post-xorlo) Lojban. I will identify logical problems as well as practical disadvantages. Finally, I will offer a solution that addresses both.

Not only is the current system both impractical and unintuitive, its introduction also left behind one major logical flaw as Lojban made the move from singular logic to plural logic.

Read on to find out what singular logic and plural logic are, how they are related to xorlo, and why the current situation is not tenable.

A Simpler Connective System

This article is part of the Simpler series on simplifying certain aspects of Lojban.

“How does one say “and” in Lojban?”
“Well… it depends, you know.  For sumti, it’s .e.  For tanru and sentences, it’s je. For bridi tails it’s gi’e. And those were just the afterthought connectives. Forethought “and” is ge for everything but tanru, which use gu’e instead. Relative clauses are connected with zi’e.”
“… oh.”

With no less than six ways to say “and” as well as roughly the same number for each of the other logical functions (OR, IFF, WHETHER-OR-NOT) totalling 26, the Lojban connective system can be quite daunting. But despair not, for there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
